Organ Donation Awareness Session at Raje Police Academy for Batch 1 and Batch 2, Mansarovar, Navi Mumbai |
On June 30, 2025, an Organ Donation Awareness Session was held at Raje Police Academy, Mumbai, for two batches of police trainees. The session was attended by approximately 95 participants, including trainees and faculty members. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the critical need for organ donation and the role that police personnel can play in this life-saving process. The session was conducted by Ms. Sakshi, who provided a comprehensive overview of organ donation, beginning with the explanation of cardiac death and brain death — two crucial medical conditions that determine donor eligibility. She also elaborated on the difference between solid organ donation (heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, etc.) and tissue donation (including eyes and skin), along with the timelines for viable transplantation. In addition to the basics, Ms. Sakshi presented key statistics on organ donation in India and globally, highlighting the growing gap between donors and patients waiting for transplants. She also introduced the concepts of the “opt-in” and “opt-out” systems — explaining how different countries approach organ donation, and how India currently follows the opt-in model, where individuals must explicitly register to become donors. The role of police officers in Medico-Legal Cases (MLC) and the formation of Green Corridors was also discussed, with emphasis on how law enforcement plays a vital role in facilitating timely organ transport, often making the difference between life and death for a recipient. The session was interactive, with participants asking insightful questions. Ms. Jaymala Thorat, not only pledged for organ donation after the session but also shared a touching sentiment: “Anyway, after death, it gets wasted — it’s the best thing we can gift to someone in need.” Her statement deeply resonated with the participants and underscored the emotional and humanitarian aspect of organ donation. By the end of the session, one participant pledged to donate organs, marking a step forward in spreading awareness within the policing community. We would like to sincerely thank Mr. Sagar Ghorpade and Ms. Jaymala Thorat for their support in organizing the session and for giving us this valuable opportunity to engage with the academy. Their encouragement and cooperation played a key role in the success of the event.
