Organ Donation Awareness Workshop at Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences

On June 21, 2025, MOHAN Foundation organized a comprehensive workshop dedicated to organ donation at the Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Narketpally, Telangana. The event, hosted at Giridhar Auditorium, drew an impressive attendance of third and fourth-year medical students (400 students). 

The proceedings commenced with a meticulous registration process, wherein each delegate meticulously completed attendance protocols, received an information brochure titled "Gift of Life," along with distinctive green awareness ribbons. Mr. Venkatesh Kattela, Project Manager and team assisted in ensuring this initial phase was seamless, contributing to the smooth integration of participants and establishing a foundational understanding of the workshop's purpose.

The formal inauguration of the workshop was marked by a ceremonial lamp lighting. Esteemed dignitaries gracing the dais included Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director of MOHAN Foundation; Dr. B. Ranga Rao, Vice Principal (Administration); Dr. P. Sudhir Babu, Vice Principal (Academic); Dr. Vinay Kumar Reddy, Assistant Professor; and Dr. A. Srinivas, Senior Resident from the Department of Urology. The event was further distinguished by the esteemed presence of Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee of MOHAN Foundation, and Dr. Murthy, Professor and HOD from the Department of Urology. Their collective presence lent considerable gravitas to the event.

The workshop curriculum was meticulously structured to provide a holistic understanding of organ donation and transplantation, encompassing a diverse array of pertinent topics:

  • Organ Donation Concepts and Transplant Law by Dr. Bhanuchandra Srivari, Operations Manager (MOHAN Foundation).
  • Understanding Brain Death and its diagnosis by Dr. Momin Abdul Jaleel, Professor of Neurosurgery at KMSRC.
  • An interactive tissue donation quiz by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer (MOHAN Foundation).
  • Grief Counselling and "Making the Ask" in sensitive situations, led by Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, which was an interactive session.
  • Real-life case studies from senior transplant coordinators Dr. Bhanu Prakash and Mrs. Ranjini Shankar, 
  • Standard hospital protocols for deceased organ donation, including an activity-based session on stakeholders and coordination, with students actively displaying placards representing each stakeholder presented by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde.
  • The Role of State Authority, discussing collaborations with NOTTO, ROTTO, SOTTO, transplant waiting lists, and organ-based committees, presented by Dr. D. Sree Bhushan Raju, Professor & HOD, Department of Nephrology, NIMS Hyderabad
  • Understanding renal transplantation by Dr. T. Jagadeeshwar, Professor and HOD, ESI Medical College, Hyderabad.

Following each insightful presentation, the speakers were duly honored with commendatory presentations and draped with traditional shawls, a gesture of profound appreciation for their invaluable contributions.

The workshop served as an instrumental platform for enhancing awareness and fostering a deeper understanding of organ donation among the future generation of medical professionals. MOHAN Foundation thanks the management of KIMS and Dr Murthy for their support and guidance in conducting this workshop.
