Awareness Program on Organ Donation by MOHAN Foundation at AGMC & GBP Hospital, Agartala, Tripura

On June 27, 2025, an awareness and sensitization program on organ donation was organized by the Medical Education Unit (MEU) of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) Tripura, in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation. The program was held at Lecture Hall-IV of AGMC.

MOHAN Foundation was represented by Ms. Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director, NCR) and Mr. Vincent Debbarma (Project Lead, Tripura). Other dignitaries present included Dr. Sankar Chakraborty (Medical Superintendent, AGMC & GBP Hospital), Dr. Manirul Islam (Nodal Officer, SOTTO, Tripura), and several doctors from the hospital and medical college.

The program began with a warm welcome and an introduction to the theme of the session by Dr. Manirul Islam, followed by a brief address by Dr. Chakraborty. After his remarks, Dr. Chakraborty handed over the session to Ms. Pallavi Kumar for the awareness talk.

The session was conducted using a PowerPoint presentation. Ms. Kumar introduced MOHAN Foundation and provided an overview of organ donation statistics, including the current status in Tripura and the pressing need for organ transplants in India. She discussed the challenges faced by patients awaiting transplants and explained the types of organs that can be donated, types of donors, and the different kinds of death relevant to organ donation. She also covered legal aspects, including the prohibition of monetary transactions in organ transplantation, and explained the concepts of brain death, the process of declaring brain death, and the difference between coma and brain death. The presentation included information on cornea donation, opt-in and opt-out systems, and the importance of obtaining consent from donor families before organ retrieval.

A short video explaining brain death was also screened to provide participants with greater clarity on the subject.

The program was attended by around 128 participants, including doctors, nurses, faculty members from the hospital and medical college, and medical students. The session was interactive, with participants engaging actively in discussions and seeking clarifications on various aspects of organ donation.
