Organ Donation Awareness Talk Conducted at Panvel Nagar Parishad Fire Station |
On May 10, 2025, an Organ Donation Awareness Talk was conducted at the Panvel Nagar Parishad Fire Station for the firefighters. The session was led by Ms. Prarthana, Public Education Counsellor from MOHAN Foundation, a leading NGO working in the field of organ donation and transplantation in India. During the interactive session, Ms. Prarthana explained the importance of organ donation, covering both living and deceased donation. She elaborated on the difference between organ donation and tissue donation, highlighting how one donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance the lives of many more through tissue donation. She also clarified common myths and addressed queries raised by the enthusiastic participants. A special focus was given to hand transplantation, with recent success stories shared to showcase India's progress in this area. Ms. Prarthana informed the staff about the legal framework governing organ donation in India — the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act. She also shared that India's deceased organ donation rate is currently lower than countries like Spain and the USA. However, with growing awareness and community participation, India is steadily improving its standing in organ donation. She further informed about MOHAN Foundation's 24x7 helpline number (1800 103 7100), which offers guidance and assistance related to organ donation and transplantation. To further inspire the firefighters, Ms. Prarthana recommended watching the acclaimed film "Aye Zindagi," based on the real-life story of Ms. Lalitha Raghuram, the Country Director of MOHAN Foundation, whose journey has been instrumental in advancing the organ donation movement in India. A total of 38 firefighters attended both sessions, showing keen interest and appreciation for the initiative. The event was well-received, with the firefighters acknowledging the importance of spreading the message of organ donation within their communities. |
