Awareness Session on Organ Donation at Traffic Training Park, Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi

On May 7, 2025, MOHAN Foundation (MF) conducted an awareness session on organ donation for Traffic Police personnel at the Traffic Training Park in Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi. The session was led by Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director of MOHAN Foundation, and supported by Ms. Simran Anand and Ms. Sanya Santosh, Programme Officers, MF NCR.

Pallavi began with a brief introduction to MOHAN Foundation and initiated an interactive discussion to assess the participants’ understanding of organ donation. During the exchange, one participant shared that a colleague had urgently needed a kidney transplant and was fortunate to receive one from his wife. Another recounted the loss of someone close who died while awaiting a liver transplant, underscoring the critical need for greater awareness around organ donation.

She covered the following key topics in detail:

• The concept and importance of organ donation

• Who can be an organ donor

• Differences between living and deceased donors

• Organ donation during life and after death

• Brain death vs. coma

• Eye donation and corneal preservation

• Whole body donation

• Legal framework: Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994

• Role of MOHAN Foundation and its 24x7 helpline

• Common myths and facts about organ donation

She also shared a personal story of donating her late father Mr. Rajendra Kumar’s corneas in 2018, emphasizing the ease of the process and encouraging participants to initiate conversations about organ and tissue donation within their families. She further informed them about two newly established skin banks in New Delhi—at Safdarjung Hospital and Army Hospital (Research & Referral).

Additionally, Pallavi highlighted the vital role that traffic police personnel play in the creation of green corridors, which enable the timely and unhindered transport of donated organs. One participant recalled a personal experience of losing a nephew to a road traffic accident, during which organ donation was never discussed by the hospital. This highlighted a crucial gap in awareness and communication during emergencies.

The session was well received, with around 260 participants in attendance.
