Transplant Coordinators Training Program - Day 2

  • The second day training for the transplant coordinators started with Dr.Navin Jayakumar’s lecture on “Human Brain”. His lecture covered all the aspects of brain structure and its function. The various parts of brain, functions of each part, transmission of information to and from the brain to the rest of the body, the cycle between the stimulus and the response were clearly explained to the participants. He mainly focused on brain stem- part connecting the brain to the spinal cord which gets damaged in brain death patients. His presentation with simple pictures helped the trainees to gain knowledge on twelve different kinds of cranial nerves that present in the brain stems. The functions of each cranial nerve and the examinations being done to establish brain death were clearly elucidated by the faculty.

    Dr. Sumana Navin, the Course Director, MOHAN Foundation discussed about “Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994”. She emphasized all the seven chapters that take place in THO Act 1994. She dealt with authority for the removal of human organs, registration and regulation of hospitals, regulation of organ retrieval, transplantation, and preservation of organs, Authorization Committee, offences and penalties.

    The third session was handled by Ms. Sujatha, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation on “The Transplantation of Human Organs Rules 1995”. The forms that take place in THO Act 1994, the authorization committee and evaluation done by the authorization committee in terms of live related and unrelated organ donation were discussed in the third session.

    Ms. Veena, Transplant coordinator, MOHAN Foundation took the post lunch session on “Tamil Nadu Government Orders”. She explained the Govt. orders that regulate brain death declaration, procedures involved in brain death declaration, authorization committee and responsibilities, cadaver transplant procedure, organ sharing, transplant centre responsibilities, non transplant organ retrieval centres.
