Rejuvenation of Stem cells by GSK-3 Inhibitor

December 12, 2005
  • Professor Mick Bhatia and his team from Robarts Research Institute have found that supplementation of GSK-3 Inhibitors with Cord blood regenerates the immune system to produce immune cells which fights against cancer cells. Researchers have found that this drug GSK-3 which is used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and diabetes to boost the immune cells without causing any toxicity or side effects.

Cancer chemotherapy apart from being cytotoxic to cancer cells also affects the normal cells and immune system degeneration. Stem cells from bone marrow transplants and cord blood from fetus were used for regeneration of Immune system. Transplant rejection was showed by some patients to bone marrow transplants and in patients receiving umbilical cord the amount of stem cells produced in the cancer patient was very low.

Researchers from this study have found that supplementation of the drug GSK-3 inhibitor along with umbilical cord blood found to increase the regeneration of immune cells. The Researchers have published the results of this work in the Journal Nature Medicine.
