Darek Fidyka, who was paralyzed from the chest down in 2010 following a knife attack, is now able to walk again using a frame thanks to a new therapy that transplanted cells from his nasal cavity into his spinal cord.

Surgeons in Poland along with their counterparts in London performed this novel surgery. Fidyka hailed the outcome of the surgery as incredible adding, "When you can't feel almost half your body, you are helpless, but when it starts coming back it's like you were born again."

Prof Geoff Raisman, chair of neural regeneration at University College London's Institute of Neurology, who led the UK research team, told the BBC that the effort was "more impressive than man walking on the moon".

This research effort was supported by the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation (NSIF) and the UK Stem Cell Foundation (UKSCF). The details of the research are published in the journal Cell Transplantation.
