Liver Transplant Surgery Conducted In Bangalore

December 16, 2005
  • A rare liver transplant surgery has been conducted by Indian doctors in the city of Bangalore on Rohit Pillai, a one-year-old boy. The surgery took place at the Asha Dinesh Institute for Organ Transplant. The mother was the donor for the child who was afflicted by a congenital disease.

The transplant surgeon Sanjay Govil said that the boy who was born with itching and jaundice was now near normal, but he may have to go through some constraints where his lifestyle is concerned. A single hospital which has the facilities for performing major organ transplants is required in the country to bring such facilities within the reach of the common man.

Rohit's surgery cost about Rs. 5 lakh. Liver transplant is a very complex surgery which results in excessive blood loss and involves blood transfusion. The normal cost of the surgery would have been Rs 15 to Rs 30 lakh, but the Asha Dinesh Institute supported the surgery, bringing down the cost for the patient’s family. The operation was conducted in October 2005, and the boy is reported to be recovering rapidly.
