The number of patients diagnosed with kidney failure is increasing every day. A patient with kidney failure undergoes dialysis to get a chance of living a productive life. Dialysis is a procedure which substitutes many of the normal functions of a normal kidney. Once a patient is diagnosed with kidney failure he/she has two options; to either continue dialysis for the rest of their life or to undergo a kidney transplant.
A person choosing to undergo a transplant has to go on the wait list, and one can never tell when the patient will finally get the organ. The patient either has to choose between regular hospital visits for the rest of his/her life by undergoing dialysis or await for an organ donor to donate his organs.
Either option requires the patient to have a good financial background. A kidney transplant would also require the patient to have immunosuppressants and medication during his entire life.
There is hope for patients, as scientists have been working on a solution to kidney failure. Dr. Shuvro Roy from University of California, San Francisco and Dr. William H. Fissel from Vanderbilt University Medical Center have invented the first ever bionic kidney. The function of the bionic kidney is that it can act as a replacement for a kidney that has stopped functioning.
It is said that in two years time the World’s first Bionic Kidney would replace dialysis;
the added advantage is that it would have a zero rejection factor. This is good news as it would be better than a donor kidney, as donor kidneys have rejections under certain circumstances. It is said that the bionic kidney would be the size of a coffee cup, which consists of numerous microchips which would be regulated by the heart. The function of the bionic kidney is similar to a normal kidney to filter out all the toxins from the blood. It balances the levels of sodium and potassium and regulates the blood pressure as well.

is a process which is said to be similar to that of microelectronics in computers. The device has about 15 microchips constructed in layers. It has living renal cells which grow in and around the filters of the microchip which in turn acts like a living kidney.
One of the main challenges of this technique is to ensure there is no clotting while blood is being pushed through the device. A constant check on the device that there is no clotting or destruction of the device is guaranteed by using fluid dynamics
which has been designed by Amanda Bucks, a Biomedical engineer.
The National Institute of health in 2015 funded this project with $6 million, which the scientists have tried to put to full use. It is said that human trails would commence only in 2018
due to current lack of funding.
There are a lot of benefits associated with the bionic kidney, such as no immunosuppressants, low risk of infection, continuous treatment, increased mobility, cost saving, and the benefit of just a single surgery for lifelong blood connection with the device.
