Five Percent Increase in Organ Donations in Australia

There has been a five percent increase in the number of organ donations in Australia in 2012 and hopes to improve the levels by 2015.

Organ and Tissue Authority chief executive Yael Cass is happy with the progress and expressed appreciation that many Australian states and territories have met or exceeded the target in 2012.

It appears that the nation is geared up to meet the 2015 target.

Authorities are happy with the number of Australian kidney and liver transplants which was the highest in 2012 - 606 kidney transplant recipients and 230 liver transplants.

Yet, transplants are still quite rare as there are very strict rules regarding organ donation.

Organ transplants can occur only from brain dead patients in intensive care units and even though 76,600 people had died in Australian hospitals last year, only 790 were in intensive care.
