Farmers Offer Kidneys For Sale. Shame On Society?

February 4, 2006
  • The cotton farmers of Dorli in Wardha district and Lehgaon in Amravati have a bizarre way of showing their anger against the government. The residents of Shingnapur village in the region offered to start a kidney sale center and invited the President, the Prime Minister, Union Agriculture Minister and Maharashtra Chief Minister to inaugurate it.

This is seemingly to attract the attention of the Government towards themselves and their plight. This is done predominantly to wipe of the debts they have so the farmers say, most of them are serious about what they have agreed i.e., the sale of kidneys.

The incident reinforces a concern that many have expressed, that the sale of organs could lead to exploitation.

They worry that markets in organs are potentially unfair to both donors and recipients. If money is offered to organ donors, the most desperate like these poor farmers will be the most easily attracted.

The kind of mindset, which the farmers have, may show their frustrations. But it is trying to thwart the governmental effort as well the organizations who campaign for cadaver Organ donations as MOHAN Foundation, to curb the menace of trade in Human organs.

It has been repeatedly experienced that it is unethical immoral to trade in Human organs and when incidents such as this one sends a negative signals to the efforts of the government.

The commerce is so rampant already as scandals one after the other hit headlines with amazing periodicity. With second most populous country and steadily increasing organ failures, the answer lies in Organ donation from cadaver donors.

The Government of India and the state governments will have to take a positive step to adopt a policy of promoting the cause of cadaver organ donation. This will help curb the menace of sale of human organs as well as alleviating the sufferings of the populations who suffer from organ failures.
