Doctors at Fortis Hospital, Mumbai, India attempted heart transplant, nearly 50 years after the first attempt by doctors at Parel's KEM Hospital.

A 60-year-old woman was brought to the hospital with intra-cerebral bleeding and was declared brain dead the next day. The family members gave their consent to Jupiter Hospital to retrieve her liver, kidneys, cornea and the heart.

"The family agreed to donate all organs after initial hesitation about the heart retrieval was addressed by us," said Dr Gautam Ramakanthan of Jupiter Hospital.

The Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZT-CC) co-ordinated with Fortis in Mulund for the transplantation. A corridor was created between Thane and Mulund toll, allowing the doctors to transport the heart within 12 minutes for a 41-year-old patient with cardiomyopathy.

Unfortunately, the heart was not transplanted as the surgeons felt the heart's function suffered a bit during retrieval of the liver. The donor's liver was given to a 30-year-old woman, while the kidneys were given to a senior citizen from Thane.

"We did not think the heart was in the best condition to be transplanted. The patient is serious, and we will go ahead with the transplant if we get a heart within few days," said a doctor.
