On 6th June 2018, MOHAN Foundation Mumbai was invited by Mr. Vinod Chavan, Senior Inspector, for an awareness talk on organ donation at Panvel Police Station, Navi Mumbai.
Mrs. IndumatiThakker (a social worker based in Panvel) shared a brief introduction highlighting as to how many people are losing their lives to organ failure as they do not get the life-saving organ in time due to lack of awareness among the public.A few years back, people were not aware of eye donation (Netra Daan) but, due to sustained efforts of different stakeholder, now the awareness is quite high. She introduced MOHAN Foundationas an NGO working for organ donation since the past 20 years.
Thereafter Mrs. Jigisha Yadav began the awareness session by sharing with the audience that MOHAN Foundation is actually an acronym for “Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Networking”. She went on to share its mission and various objectives. She then asked the police personnel as to what came to their minds when they thought of organ donation. The responses were positive.
Further, she explained to them the concept of organ donation, types of death, the organs and tissues that can be donated after cardiac death and after brain death, the concept of brain death, difference between brain death and coma. Various myths and facts related to organ donation were discussed and information about organ allocation, and distribution were also shared.
Mrs. Jigisha Yadavalso explained the legal aspects, the actual role of police when Brain death occurs in Medico Legal cases. Forms 8 and 10 pertaining to Transplantation of Human Organs Act were shown. It was highlighted to them that time was of essence if such requests were to come to them from the hospital, for their approval. It was explained to them as to how organ donation is a race against time and the procedures for approvals must be acted upon as early as possible.
Around 40 police personnel attended the session. A few queries were raised and they were satisfactorily answered by Mrs. Jigisha Yadav. Many picked up forms for further signups.
We thank Mr.Vinod Chavan (Senior Inspector) and Mr.Tawade (API) for inviting us and for lending their support to the cause of Organ Donation.
