One Month Transplant Coordinators’ Training Programme in Chennai, June 2013

The Transplant Coordinator’s Training programme in MOHAN Foundation started from 3rd June, 2013 and it extended to 28th June, 2013. Twenty two trainees from different hospitals across the nation and others from professions like marketing and social work attended the training. The Training was possible due to the support given by Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

 

The faculty comprised of professionals from Medicine, Human Resource, and Social Work. Doctors and senior transplant coordinators from Government and Private Hospitals addressed the trainees. Trainees visited TACT academy,  TANKER Foundation,  Apollo Blood Bank, and Eye Bank of  Shankar Netralaya to understand practical application of the training.

 

The training programme covered topics like types of death, brain death, identification and maintenance, the organs that can be donated after death and live donation, anatomy, physiology and functions of major organs.  Other topics covered were: legal and ethical aspects of donation and transplantation, cadaver transplant programme in different states and the organ sharing network.  

 

The trainees were trained in the aspects of grief counselling and also to get the consent from the family members of the brain dead patient. There were interactive sessions on communication skills and conflict management. The trainees did various role plays of counselling and also mock sessions of counselling the relatives of brain dead patient. Various case studies and experience were shared by senior transplant coordinators so as to strengthen the confidence of the budding transplant coordinators.

 

Each day was divided into various sessions which included presentations, videos, role plays, practical sessions, group work and observation.  The trainees were asked to talk to general public (25 people) and gather their impression on the awareness level on organ donation.

 

On culmination, Mrs. Lalita Raghuram, Country director MOHAN Foundation, distributed the certificates.
