Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplant (FORT) & Department of Critical Care Medicine, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram, in partnership with MOHAN Foundation, successfully organized a Critical Care Conclave on Deceased Organ Donation on October 1, 2018, at FMRI, Gurugram. It was co-hosted by Society of Critical Care Medicine (NCR) and endorsed by National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). Dr. Avnish Seth (Director, FORT) organized the entire event.

 

The critical care conclave started with a welcome address by Dr. Ritu Garg (Zonal Director, FMRI), Dr. Dhruva Chaudhry (President Elect, ISCCM) and Mr. Bhavdeep Singh(CEO, Fortis Healthcare Ltd.)

 

Dr. Maria Paula Gomez (Executive Director, DTI, Barcelona), the guest speaker at the conclave made her presentation on “Quality Indicators in Deceased Organ Donation Process” where she discussed about the various quality programs in organ donation such as DOPKI, QAP & ODEQUS that is followed in Spain. She also discussed as to how the deceased organ donation program can pick up momentum in all the states of India.

 

Ms. Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation NCR) spoke on counselling of families for organ donation. It was more of a discussion that dealt with who, when and how to approach the families of potential organ donors.

 

More than 20 eminent speakers and experienced professionals from the medical fraternity conducted sessions on: -

• Diagnosis of Brain Death & Nuances of Apnea Test
• Donor Optimization
• Case Capsules: Organ Donation
• Counselling families for organ donation
• Donation after circulatory death: Feasibility in India
• Issues faced by critical care teams in declaration of brain stem death and organ donation

 

A panel discussion on ‘issues faced by critical care teams in declaration of brain stem death’ was conducted wherein the participants shared their personal experiences in such cases and discussed the possible alternatives to make this process smoother. An interesting discussion took place on ‘de-escalation of ventilator support’.

 

38 faculty and delegates involved in critical care units from different hospitals in NCR and a few from Mumbai attended the conclave.

 

In the end, Dr. Avnish Seth thanked all the delegates and eminent speakers for making the session an interactive one.
