Awareness session on organ donation at School of Nursing, Galgotias University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh

On September 07, 2018, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at Dept. of Nursing, Galgotias University, Greater Noida. It was organised by Ms. Anindita Sabath (Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation Delhi-NCR) and coordinated by Prof. Ashia Qureshi (Dean, School of Nursing, Galgotias University). Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi was the resource person for the session.

 

Galgotias University through its Nursing Program equips budding nurses with the competences they need for a successful career. The School of Nursing bridges the gap between theory and practice by providing highly effective instructional modes and lab and clinical facilities. The mission of the Galgotias University’s School of Nursing is to pursue excellence in nursing education, research, practice and service.

 

The Chief Guest for the session was Prof. Dr. Renu Luthra, Vice Chancellor, Galgotias University. She started the session by speaking on the role of youth in propagating the message of organ donation. Prof. Qureshi also briefed about organ donation and the role of nurses in this noble cause.

 

Dr. Muneet then introduced the concept of organ donation & transplantation. A few introductory questions were asked to the participants to gauge their understanding about the topic. She then explained the reasons as to why other European countries have much higher ODR (Organ Donation Rate) as compared to India. The condition of brain stem death was explained with the help of a video and common causes of brain death and difference between coma and brain-death were also elaborated.

 

The participants had few queries as to why do rejection happen after renal transplantation and the process of registering a patient’s name in the waiting list for organs. All their queries were addressed in a professional manner.

 

The session ended with a motivational video on organ donation. Close to 120 participants attended the session and 80 forms (Form 7) were picked up.
