Awareness session on organ donation at Metro Heart Institue with Multispecialty, Faridabad

On the occasion of World Kidney Day, Department of Nephrology, Urosciences and Kidney Transplant of Metro Heart Institute with Multispecialty, Faridabad invited MOHAN Foundation on March 11, 2018 to conduct an awareness session on organ donation. Dr. Rajiv Kumar Sethia, Sr. Consultant-Urology and Rental Transplant was the main felicitator in organizing this talk.

The resource person for the day was the Ms. Mareena Thomas Programme Officer Delhi-NCR , accompanied by Mr. Pawan Kumar, Transplant Coordinator and Shweta Mittal who was interning with MOHAN Foundation. The celebration started with a welcome note by the Chief Guest and Host Dr. Neeraj Jain, MBBS, MD (Medicine), DM (Cardiology) working with Metro Heart Institute as a Medical Superintendent and Senior Intervention Cardiologist followed by few small talks by doctors from hospital itself.

Then, the talk by Mareena Thomas started with a beautiful presentation in Hindi for the understanding of the audience who were very enthusiastic and curious to know the exact details of organ and tissue donation as visible from their questions. They asked about the eligibility and requirements for being a donor and recipient, its legal aspects and the procedure if their kith and kin want to donate. Ms. Mareena clarified all their doubts, myths and confusions, highlighting the major difference between coma and brain death with the help of an animated video. She also shared many inspirational stories of donors and recipients including the one of Ms. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director of MOHAN Foundation who donated her son’s organs. The aura of the hall in the basement suddenly changed with these motivational personal stories.

Through interaction, we came to know about one middle-aged person who pledged his body and others who already pledged their organs but still lacked full knowledge. This showed urgent necessity of such awareness talks and also the dire need of the hour, to work on this less sensitized issue of organ donation which is so important to save lives of millions of people dying worldwide every day in different parts of the world, just waiting for one single donor, like we work on education, environmental protection and other social issues.

In the end, Form number 7 of NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization), government body, were also distributed for getting donor cards made. The talk ended with a heart touching video showcasing the gratitude of recipients and happiness of donors of organs, applauded by everyone with thunderous claps, followed by a token of thanks and lunch with future promise of working again to aware more minds, shake more bodies and awaken more souls.

100 people who attended this awareness session which included hospital’s doctors, staff, dialysis patients and their families.
