Continuing Medical Education On Deceased Organ Donation Organised By Jawaharlal Nehru Institute Of Medical Sciences, Imphal

Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal organised a continuing medical education program on “Deceased Organ Donation” on 22nd December 2017. 

Dr. Rajendra Singh, Director of JNIMS along with IMA President inaugurated the program. 

Dr. Gangmoi Angam, Associate Professor of Department of Forensic Medicine, JNIMS, Dr. Rajeev T.P., Director of ROTTO spoke about ROTTO, its role and the accomplishments thus far.  Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee of MOHAN Foundation spoke about the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994 and the subsequent amendments and rules.  Dr.Sudakshina Mullick, Intensivist from R.N. Tagore Hospital, Kolkata presented on brain death identification and maintenance.  A film on brain death identification and apnea testing was shown.  Dr. Nithya Krishnan, Professor Transplantation Consultant, Coventry Hospital, UK spoke on the importance of tissue typing labs and how WHO and TTS can help in setting up labs in northeastern part of India.  Later, Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director of MOHAN Foundation showed a film on grief counseling – good and bad approach.  She also narrated a donor story and presented on grief counseling. 

Finally, there was a panel discussion on “how to get deceased organ donation program started in Imphal”, moderated by Dr. Sunil Shroff.  Dr. Rajendra Singh, Dr. Rajeev T.P., Dr. Sholay Meitie, Nodal officer of SOTTO,Manipur, Dr. Guliver Potsongbam, Nephrologist from Shija Hospital, Imphal participated in the panel discussion.  From the questions posed and the energies demonstrated, it was quite evident that Manipur is indeed ready to start the deceased organ donation program. 

The audience consisted of nephrologists, intensivists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, administrators, hospital management and nurses. 

The meeting concluded at 5 pm.
