One Week Transplant Coordinators’ Training Programme held in Wardha, Maharashtra

Under the aegis of National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India and  Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) Mumbai, MOHAN Foundation in collaboration with Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC) Nagpur, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMS) and Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital (AVBRH) conducted a one week Transplant Coordinators’ Training Programme from 20th to 24th November 2017 at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha. This training was supported by SBI Foundation.

 

52 candidates were present not only from Maharashtra, but also  Tamil Nadu, Assam, Haryana and Manipur. They received their certificates with a unique registration number from NOTTO. This was the 50th training programme conducted by MOHAN Foundation and the 16th in partnership with NOTTO.

 

Dr. Rajiv Borle, Hon. Vice Chancellor, DMIMS (DU), Dr. Babaji Ghewade, CMS, AVBRH, Dr. Chandrashekhar Mahakalkar, Additional Medical Superintendent (Quality), AVBRH, Dr. Vibhavari Dani, President ZTCC, Nagpur were present at the inauguration. MOHAN Foundation was represented by Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Honorary Director Nagpur, Secretary, ZTCC-Nagpur, Dr. Sumana Navin, Course Director and Ms. Ann Alex, Programme Associate.

 

The training covered the medical, legal and ethical aspects and focused on grief counselling as well. Various doctors graced the training with their presence by explaining  how transplantation is done, its requirements and the need. Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram helped the participants understand the Concepts of Organ Donation and Transplantation and shared a few case studies for them to realise how each case is unique. Dr. Ravi Wankhede spoke on ZTCC Nagpur’s roles,  activities and its development, and shared his experience of some of the donations that had taken place in Nagpur. He described in detail a step by step process to set up a deceased donation programme in a hospital.

 

Dr. Anjalee Chiwhane, Professor, Medicine, JNMC explained the identification and certification of a brain dead donor. Dr. Virendra Belekar, Intensivist, Neurosurgical ICU, AVBRH spoke on maintaining a potential deceased donor, educative videos were screened for better understanding. Dr. Sumana Navin took various sessions over the course of the training. She briefed the participants about Breaking bad news. She also explained the counselling skills required for approaching a family for organ donation & Grief Counselling; a video (in Hindi) on good practice and poor practice, a film adapted from NHSBT UK, was screened. She took the participants through the journey of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, gave an overview on how living related transplants work. With the help of role plays she illustrated how grieving families should be counselled and the qualities a Transplant Coordinator must possess. She also stressed on being aware about the history of transplant, timeline of successful transplants in the world and the current status of deceased donation in the World. Dr. Sumana then explained the Basics of Liver diseases, Liver Failure and Liver Transplant, Whole body donation.   In her final session she spoke  about the roles, responsibilities, and activities of ROTTO-SOTTO, Mumbai. 

 

Dr. Sunil Kumar, Professor and Head Department of Medicine, JNMC explained the common causes of Kidney diseases and the role of dialysis. Dr. Sanjay Kolte, Kidney Transplant Surgeon, Executive Member ZTCC Nagpur, inspired the participants with his account of the first deceased organ donation in Nagpur on 5th April 2013.  He also spoke about Kidney Transplantation. An e-module video on Hand Transplantation by Dr. Subramania Iyer was screened. Ms. Ann Alex gave an overview on the deceased donation programme in India and the various Transplant Organisations, she then went on to give various interesting ideas on how to spread awareness about organ donation and transplantation to the public. She elucidated on the National Organ Transplant Programme in India and NOTTO. Dr. Prakash M Mohite, Professor Department of Forensic Medicine, Vice Dean (Administration), JNMC shared information on the forms required for medico-legal cases and how coordinators must approach the situation. Dr. Pradnya Gadre, Senior Ophthalmologist, spoke on Eye Donation, Eye Banking and Corneal Transplant.. Rtn. Dr. Sameer S Jahagirdar, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Rotary Ochri Skin Bank in a very interesting session explained in detail (with the help of pictures) on Skin Donation, Skin Banking and Skin grafting.

 

The movie Phir Zindagi by ZTCC Pune was shown. Participants were able to relate to the theory through various activities conducted such as Poster making, packing of organs, retrieval of organs (order the organs should be retrieved), the donation process and so on.   

 

Present at the Valedictory function were Dr. Babaji Ghewade, CMS, AVBRH, and Dr. Chandrashekhar Mahakalkar, Additional Medical Superintendent (Quality), AVBRH to give away the certificates to the participants.
