MOHAN Foundation in partnership with FORT (Fortis Organ Retrieval & Transplant) under the aegis of NOTTO (National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization) successfully completed the training on ‘TRANSPLANT COORDINATION’ from April 11-15, 2017 held at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon. This was the fourth consecutive year the training was held in partnership with FORT under the guidance of Dr. Avnish Seth (Director, FORT). This training was supported by the TATA Trusts.

 

58 delegates of varied profiles – transplant coordinators, doctors, nurses, medical social workers, senior managers, medical superintendent and counselors from 12 states (Rajasthan, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Assam, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh) and 2 Union Territories (Delhi & Chandigarh) of India attended the training.

 

More than 30 eminent speakers and experienced professionals from the medical/non-medical fraternity conducted sessions on: -

•      Introduction to Organ Transplant

•      Basic concept of organ donation

•      History of Transplant

•      Organ Donation & Transplant Organizations

•      THOA

•      NOTP & NOTTO (registry/allocation/sharing)

•      Qualities & role of a Transplant Coordinator

•      Basics of heart/liver/kidney/pancreas/ failure & transplant

•      Tissue Transplant (cornea/skin/bone/heart valves)

•      Counseling/role plays

•      Public awareness/media engagement

 

A session on ‘writing a scientific paper,’ was a new addition to this year’s training agenda that drew tremendous response from the participants. The session helped the participants to understand as to how to select & organize content of the scientific paper, how to draft and revise the writing so that the final paper is useful to a broad audience and not just few specialists.

 

A panel discussion was held on the last day when the queries of the participants were addressed on various issues like, organ sharing registry, starting of deceased donation program in a state like West Bengal, allocation of funds to NGO’s working in the field of organ donation for conducting public awareness events and transplant coordinators’ training and formulating guidelines for Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD).

 

In the end, Dr. Vimal Bhandari (Director, NOTTO), Dr. Sunil Shroff (Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation) and Dr. Avnish Seth gave away certificates to all the delegates who successfully completed the course.
