MOHAN Foundation invited to speak at Command Hospital(Central Command), Lucknow

On January 23, 2017, Command Hospital (Central Command), Lucknow, invited MOHAN Foundation to an event to commemorate successful completion of 100 kidney transplants in the hospital. Ms. Mareena Thomas, Programme Officer, Delhi - NCR, gave a motivational talk on organ donation to the gathering.

 

The talk was organized by Col (Dr.) Arun Kumar, Prof.  & Head of Dept. of Nephrology, Command Hospital, Lucknow. The audience comprised many army officers, major generals and medical staff from Command Hospital. The important dignitaries at the session were Lieutenant General Rajan Ravindran, Chief of Staff of Central Command who was the chief guest for the program; Major General Vibha Dutta, Sena Medal, Head of Command Hospital and Dr. Ravi Kant, Vice Chancellor of King George Medical University. Another occasion for the celebration was the recent registration of the hospital to start the deceased transplantation program.

 

Ms. Mareena in her presentation emphasized on the need i.e. demand versus supply of organs, who and when can the organs be donated, Indian Law that governs the transplant activity i.e. THO Act 1994 and the process of organ donation. She also discussed the criteria for solid organ donation. It is only in "brain death" condition that solid organs can be retrieved in a hospital that is registered with the state appropriate authority as a transplantation centre and has a brain death committee. A video on brain death was shown to the audience to reinforce the concept.

 

Following this Dr. A.K. Huda, Major General, MG (Med) of Central Command Hospital made a presentation on a comparative study on the system of kidney transplantation in Army Hospitals and other private and public hospitals. He also touched upon few myths due to which families tend to disagree for organ donation. Kidney recipient and their families were felicitated at the end of the program.

 

The participants appreciated the talk and unanimously agreed that there was a greater need to sensitize the public on organ donation. Around 150 participants attended the session and 50 donor cards were picked up.
