Navjeevan-MFJCF Team and MOHAN Foundation held a one week Transplant Coordinators’ Training Programme at the J K Lon Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan from 12^th to 16^th September 2016. There were 74 participants from all over Rajasthan and India. The training programme has been supported by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust (now called the Tata Education & Development Trust), Mumbai since 2009. This is the 38^th training programme that is being conducted by MOHAN Foundation.

 

The inauguration was graced by Mr. Rajendra Singh Rathore, Honourable Health Minister of Rajasthan; Dr. U. S. Agrawal, Principal, SMS Hospital & Medical College; Dr. Man Prakash Sharma, MS, SMS hospital, Jaipur and Dr. Ashok Gupta, Medical Superintendent, J K Lon Hospital, Jaipur. The other dignitaries present at the inauguration were Mrs. M L Mehta; Justice S S Bhargava; Mr. Rajesh Yadav, MD, RSRTC; Suresh Mishra, Jaipur Marathon;  Mrs.  Manju Sharma, Co-Chairperson, EHCC;  Dr. Mala Airun, MS, Narayana Hrudayalaya; Ms. Hema Gera, Jairangam  and the representatives from MOHAN Foundation. It was an honour to have the families of two deceased donors at the inauguration – Mr. Shankar Meena (father of deceased donor Mr. Naveen Meena) and Ms. Khushboo Mehta (daughter of deceased donor Mrs. Nirmala Mehta). Minister Rajendra Singh Rathore congratulated the Navjeevan-MFJCF team for the high number of delegates and stressed on the need for training. He said that the last training which trained 72 candidates was instrumental for the success of the Cadaver Organ Donation Programme in Rajasthan.

 

The faculty from MOHAN Foundation –Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, Dr. Sumana Navin, Course Director and Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director Delhi-NCR took lectures on a variety of subjects like Concepts of Organ Donation, Legal Framework according to THOA, Overview of Status of Deceased Donation in India, Counseling techniques & Donor stories, Qualities & Role of Transplant Coordinator in Deceased Donation, Setting up Deceased Donation Programme in a Hospital, Body donation, Bone donation, and Ethical issues in Organ Donation and Transplantation. A number of films on various topics were also shown to reinforce concepts.

 

In addition to the faculty from MOHAN Foundation, the faculty also included Dr. Manish Sharma, Nodal officer Organ Donation Programme, Rajasthan who spoke on the Rajasthan Network for Organ Sharing (RNOS) and Deceased Donation in Rajasthan; Dr. Shabbar H Joad, Fortis Hospital explained about Maintenance of a potential Deceased Brain Dead Donor; Dr. Ajeet Bana, EHCC gave the lecture on Basics of Heart Failure & Transplant ; Dr. Sandeep Nizhawan, SMS gave an excellent talk on Basics of Liver disease & Liver Failure and Liver Transplant; Dr. Dhananjay Agarwal, SMS gave information on Kidney diseases and dialysis; Dr. Vinay Malhotra, HOD Nephrology, SMS Medical College, Jaipur detailed all aspects of Kidney Transplantation; Dr. Swati Tomar, NIIMS gave a presentation on Corneal donation & transplant ; Dr. Rakesh Jain, SMS informed the delegates about Skin Donation & skin banking; Dr Rakesh Chittora, Fortis Hospital gave a lecture on Heart Valve donation & Transplant; Dr. R.K. Poonia, SMS gave  a lecture on Role of Transplant Coordinator in Medico Legal cases, Dr Sandhya Gulati, SMS explained the Difficulties in Cross Match And HLA Typing in Cadaveric Donation, and Dr. Ram Daga, SMS gave a lecture on Pancreas and Small Intestine Transplant.

 

Dr. Sanjana Bhojwani, Navjeevan Member spoke on Navjeevan -Activities and future plans; Mrs. Hemlata Shah, Navjeevan Member gave the presentation on Donor Stories from Rajasthan and also shared her experiences as a Counselor in Champion speaks; and Dr. Teena Sahwney, Navjeevan Member, gave a presentation on Tools for creating public awareness. Dr. Anita Hada Sangwan, Member, MFJCF spoke on Role of media in promoting organ donation & transplantation and also the Donor Stories from Rajasthan.

 

The delegates were fortunate to hear Prof. Dr. Vimal Bhandari, Director, NOTTO, Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India talk about National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) and its role. He also explained the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP), its objectives, scope and plans for rolling out the programme across the country.

 

There was enthusiastic participation from the delegates in the role plays, quiz and panel discussion. Some of them even recited poems and couplets that they had written inspired by the concept of organ donation!

 

The valedictory session was graced by Mr. Omendra Bhardawaj, Ex-DGP, Rajasthan, Moazzam Ali, Secretary, Rajasthan Urdu Academy; Amla Batra , Social Activist and Dr. Vimal Bhandari, Director NOTTO. Mr. Bhardawaj congratulated the participants, MOHAN Foundation team, and Navjeevan-MFJCF team and Convener, Mrs. Bhavna Jagwani for the success of the training and all the delegates who had pledged their lives to this noble cause. The dignitaries presented the completion certificates to the participants.
