3rd FORT-MOHAN Foundation training on TRANSPLANT COORDINATION under the aegis of NOTTO

MOHAN Foundation in partnership with FORT (Fortis Organ Retrieval & Transplant) under the aegis of NOTTO (National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization) successfully completed the training on ‘TRANSPLANT COORDINATION’ from April 12-16, 2016 held at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon. This was the third consecutive year the training was held in partnership with FORT under the guidance of Dr. Avnish Seth (Director, FORT).

 

58 delegates of varied profiles – transplant coordinators, doctors, nurses, medical social workers, senior managers, medical superintendent and counselors from 11 states (Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh & Kerala) and 2 union territory (Delhi & Chandigarh) of India attended the training.

 

More than 50 eminent speakers and experienced professionals from the medical/non-medical fraternity conducted sessions on: -

  • Introduction to Organ Transplant
  • Basic concept of organ donation
  • History of Transplant
  • Organ Donation & Transplant Organizations
  • THOA
  • NOTTO/ROTTO/SOTTO (registry/allocation/sharing)
  • Qualities & role of a Transplant Coordinator
  • Basics of heart/liver/kidney/pancreas/intestine failure & transplant
  • Tissue Transplant (cornea/skin/bone/heart valves)
  • Counseling/role plays
  • Public awareness/media engagement

 

Besides sessions on technical aspects of organ donation and transplantation, many senior and experienced transplant coordinators were invited to speak under the session, ‘Champion speaks’. These coordinators were from different states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Punjab and they shared their experiences especially in getting a family to say ‘yes’ to organ donation. 

 

The highlight of the training program was the panel discussion held on the last day. Dr. Arti Vij (Faculty incharge, ORBO), Dr. Harsha Jauhari (Chairman, Renal Transplant Surgery, SGRH & Advisor, Organ Transplant Programme), Dr. Sunil Shroff (Managing Trustee, MF), Dr. Bishnu Panigrahi (Vice President, FHL), Dr. S. K. Badhan (Consultant Coordinator, NOTTO), Ms Preeti Monga (CEO, Silver Linings) & Ms Anika Parashar (Trustee, Parashar Foundation) were the panelists. Dr. Avnish Seth (Director, FORT) and Ms Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director, MF) were the moderators.

 

The panelists unanimously agreed that all the stakeholders involved in the deceased donation program including the NGO’s and the hospital based organizations working in the field of organ donation should have a defined role and work cohesively under the national umbrella i.e. NOTTO.

 

Following the panel discussion a special ceremony was organized to felicitate the police personnel in gurgaon who have helped both in medico legal cases and in the formation of green corridors for timely donation and shifting of organs. Mr Navdeep Singh Virk (Commissioner of Police, Gurgaon) along with other police personnel were given certificates of appreciation and they also pledged to donate their organs.

 

In the end, Dr. Sunil Shroff and Dr. Avnish Seth gave away certificates to all the delegates who successfully completed the course.
