<p>22nd-26th August, 2011, Bangalore<br /> Supported by Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust<br /><br /> The success of an organ donation and transplant program depends on good coordination by transplant coordinators. The Govt of India, in its 2009 gazette has made appointment of transplant coordinators mandatory before a hospital is registered as a Transplant Centre.<br /><br /> To address the training needs of this cadre of health-care professionals and ensure the availability of well-trained Transplant Coordinators, MOHAN Foundation in partnership with Zonal Co-Ordination Committee in Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK) and Gift your Organ Foundation conducted a successful five day residential training programme for Transplant Coordinators from 22nd to 26th August 2011 at Snehadaan. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Satish Chandra, Vice Chancellor of NIMHANS, Bangalore. <br /><br /> Sixty participants came from all over the country, including far-flung cities like Goa, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai, representing various hospitals, to attend this training programme along with those from the home state of Karnataka. The course details were so well organized that both the medical and non-medical professionals like social workers benefited equally and were inspired to work for the noble cause of organ donation. The experienced faculty included eminent doctors from leading hospitals. The sharing of their experiences during the interactive sessions provided a valuable insight to the participants. <br /><br /> The topics covered in the programme ranged from the role of NGOs, the role of the Government organizations, the deceased donor programme in different states, The Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994 (THOA 1994), etc. Specific stress was laid on practical training in grief counseling, public education programmes, and documentation related to organ donation and transplantation. <br /><br /> The five-day programme ended with a panel discussion where representatives from the authorization committee of organ transplantation of Karnataka, Department of police and heads of various leading hospitals and NGOs in the country shared their views and deliberated on future plans to promote the deceased organ transplantation programme in the country. Each of the participants was awarded a certificate signed by over 30 members of the expert faculty. <br /><br /> This is the first of many such programmes planned by MOHAN Foundation in the state of Karnataka to train transplant coordinators who would be the future ambassadors for the deceased organ donation programme. <br /><br /><strong> Participating Institutions </strong><br /><br /> 1.
