MOHAN Foundation in partnership with FORT (Fortis Organ Retrieval & Transplant) successfully completed the One Week Transplant Coordinators' Training Program from April 7-11, 2015 held at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon. For the second consecutive year the training was held under the aegis of Dr. Avnish Seth (Director, FORT).
58 delegates of varied profiles - transplant coordinators, doctors, nurses, medical social workers, dialysis technicians, and senior managers from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal, Haryana and Delhi-NCR attended the training.
Apart from health care professionals who attended the training, few NGOs that have undertaken to work with the cause of organ donation, also attended the training such as ORGAN India (Delhi-NCR), Shine India Foundation (Kota) and Jodhpur School of Public Health (Jodhpur).
Dr Neena Verma, who lost her young son Utkarsh last year and went on to donate his corneas, has set up a foundation in his name to promote organ and tissue donation. More than 50 eminent speakers and experienced professionals from the medical/non-medical fraternity conducted and chaired sessions on : -
Besides the session on technical aspects of organ donation and transplantation, Intensive Care Unit visits was a new addition to the training program. Every day a batch of 10 delegates used to visit the ICU for practical reinforcement of the teachings especially donor identification and maintenance of a brain dead donor.
The highlight of the training program was the panel discussion held on the last day. Dr. N.S. Dharamshaktu (Addl. DGHS, MOHFW), Dr. Saudan Singh (Director, NOTTO), Dr. Aarti Vij (Faculty incharge, ORBO), Dr. Harsh Jauhari (Chairman, Renal Transplant Surgery, SGRH), Mr Daljeet Singh (President, Fortis Healthcare Ltd.) and Dr. Muktesh Chandar (Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Delhi) were the panelists. Dr. Sunil Shroff (Managing Trustee, MF) and Dr. Avnish Seth (Director, FORT) were the moderators.
The panelists shared their viewpoints on why the deceased donation program was more successful in some hospitals and not in others, how to increase the donation rate in India, what were the action points that the government had formulated for the implementation of deceased donation program in the country and how much budget has been allocated for the same, the role of NOTTO in the next 5 years and its activities and advocacy of organ donation in states where there is no activity happening.
All were unanimous on the critical need to implement the program across all the hospitals in the country involved in transplant activity, to make it a societal program, to sensitise not only the public but also the medical professionals, to identify local champions in the hospital who would take forward this program and creation of a dedicated team with support and commitment from the top management.
The training program came to a close with the valedictory function. Dr. N.S. Dharamshaktu gave away certificates to all the delegates who successfully completed the course.
