Self Help Groups Promote Organ Donation in Slums

  • On 26th April 2014 an interactive session on organ donation was organized by IMAYAM Federation, Thiruvottiyur, Chennai. The federation president Ms. Sivagami felt that Organ Donation done after brain death is very meaningful so she invited MOHAN Foundation to share about the concept of organ donation to the Self Help group. Mr. Prakash K, Transplant coordinator MOHAN Foundation conducted the session during their Annual Day Celebration.

    The session started with interaction with the members to understand how much they know about organ donation. Mr. Prakash then spoke of the activities if MOHAN Foundation and followed this with a presentation on Concept of organ donation.

    The following topics were explained to the group:

    • Importance and need of organ donation
    • Types of donations – live and deceased donation
    • Difference between Natural Death, Coma and Brain Death
    • Organs that can be donated in cardiac death and brain death
    • Eye donation
    • Preservation time of organs
    • Importance of Donor card, helpline number

     

    Totally 250 Self Help Group members participated in the programme. All of them wanted to discuss with their family regarding  pledging. They would tell of their decision in the next monthly meeting. All of them were given an information brochure. Most of the women were interested in the process of cornea donation.
