Role of Police in Deceased Organ donation – Awareness session at Police Training College, Chennai

  • MOHAN Foundation was invited for an awareness program on Organ Donation at the Police Training College in Ashok Nagar, Chennai on 26th May 2017 at 3pm. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde and Mr. Siva Shankar represented MOHAN Foundation.  The talk was  part of the refresher course for constables and sub-inspectors from different stations under Avadi Police Recruitment School (PRS).

    First the green ribbons were distributed and a pre – orientation survey was conducted to test their basic knowledge of organ donation.  This survey was useful in getting them to think about Organ Donation.  They came out with many doubts. To clear their doubts Mr. Siva Shankar started the presentation on organ donation.

    The points discussed were:

    1. Activities carried out by MOHAN Foundation
    2. Organs and tissues that can be donated
    3. When, Why, Who can donate organs
    4. Difference between Brain Death and Coma
    5. What is a Donor Card

    Mr. Siva Shankar cleared all doubts that were raised during the survey.

    The second session was about the Role of Police in Organ Donation taken by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde. She explained the importance of six hours between the first and second apnea test and the Government Orders that define their role during organ donation.

    The questions asked were?

    1. What is Green Corridor?
    2. Will the Postmortem be done after organ donation or before?

    There were 47 police staff who attended the program, all took a Donor Card to support Organ Donation. MOHAN Foundation thanks Sub Inspector Ms. Nagalakshmi of Avadi PRS for giving the opportunity to speak about organ donation.
