Punarjani, CME on Deceased Organ Donation in Ernakulam

  • On the evening of 25th October 2014, Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) and Division of Liver Transplantation, Medical Trust Hospital organized a CME on “Punarjani, An Update on Deceased Organ Donation” at Dream Hotel, Ernakulam.   There were 110 participants comprising of leading Transplant Surgeons, Neurologist and Transplant Coordinator from the state. The CME started with an enthralling song by Padmashri Usha Uthup followed by an Inaugural Speech by Mr. M G Rajamanickam IAS, Ernakulam District Collector.

     

    The Scientific programme was aimed at imparting knowledge on optimization of a potential deceased donor, process of brain death certification and legal aspects of deceased donation in medico legal cases.  Dr Christopher, Taylor Barry, Advisory Board Member of MOHAN Foundation, was the key note speaker and explained the United States Perspective on deceased organ donation. Dr. Noble Gracious S. S, Nodal Officer, KNOS then imparted an insight on the current scenario of Cadaver Donation Programme in Kerala, its progress, success and challenges. He also addressed how Neurologists can play a key role in this programme.

     

    Dr Shaji Abraham, Additional Professor of Neurology, Medical College, Thrissur explained the process involved in identification and optimization of brain death patient. For bringing more clarity on legal aspects of deceased donation in Medico Legal Cases, a talk was delivered by Dr. Hithesh Sankar, Associate Professor, Forensic Medicine. A platform was laid down for the panel of Neurologist and doctors associated with deceased donor programme for discussing on some of the challenges faced during deceased donation. The panel discussion was very lively were all Neurologists from various hospitals extended their support for the deceased donation programme.
