Dr. Ravi Wankhede was invited by the Akhil Bhartiya Marwadi Mahila Sammelan, Parola branch in Jalgaon District of Maharashtra State to deliver a talk on Organ Donation and Transplantation on 30th October 2014.
At the outset he was welcomed by Dr. Mrs. Rajkumari Jain President of the Organisation and others. All the members were dressed in traditional dress. They presented a welcome song.
Dr. Wankhede gave a PowerPoint presented highlighting the historic aspect to the recent advances of transplantation which help people get a lease a life.
He stressed on the need to accept 'brain death' as a permanent and irreversible condition from various causes which could help several people get life saving organs. He informed the audience that this is a regular practice in the developed countries and also in Tamil Nadu State of India. Dr. Wankhede asked people to learn from Tamil nadu and other States in the South. He said all this happened because of mass awareness and a helpful medical services in the State. He said Maharashtra also should strive for such a development. He stressed on the point that all religions recognise such a act as highest service to mankind.
Present on the occasion were Dr. Suresh Jain, Dr. Rahul Jain, Mrs. Hemlata Agrawal, Mrs. Rajashree Agrawal and other members of the Association. Some well know persons who attended were Bandu Nana Wani, Kishore Bapu Wani, Principal Shirole, Press representatives, etc.
Some of the questions asked were.
1. Will a family consenting to donate organs have a saying in organ distribution?
2. Who would bear the expenses of hospitals, if the family agree to donate organs?
3. Is it not possible for the Hospital not to charge the expenses, if the family agrees for organ donation?
4. Is Coma similar to Brain death?
5. Can one donate organs prior to body donation?
6. An interesting query was - Parola being a Tahsil place, it does not have any Hospital with ICU. However it has a special ambulance provided by the State Government with Ventilator. Could such patients be taken to big cities like, Nagpur where transplants are taking place, so that organs could be retrieved?
The number of people who attended were 107 and 43 people picked up the organ donation forms. 28 pledged to donate. The rest would be followed up by the hosts, as soon as they get the pledge signed.
