Organ Donor Awareness at NSS National Integration Camp, Nagpur

  • A National Integration Camp was organized by the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Regional Directorate of National Services Scheme (NSS), Pune in collaboration with the NSS Cell of RTM Nagpur University at Hislop College, Nagpur on 19th October 2016. Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur and Member of ZTCC-Nagpur, Government of Maharashtra was invited to give a talk on Organ Donation on the occasion.   

     

    Mr. Puran Chandran Meshram, Registrar RTM Nagpur University took the initiative to organize the talk. 12 States NSS In charge’s and volunteers were presented in that talk. Participant States were Karnataka, Andhra Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Goa and Maharashtra.

     

    Dr. Ravi Wankhede gave a PPP and dealt with historical, social, religious, legal and the need & importance of organ donation. He emphasized on the need to understand the concept of Brain death, which should be accepted as a permanent and irreversible condition. If the family of the deceased consent to donate the organs and tissues, such persons can help several people live. He said such organ donation is common in the developed countries.

     

    In our country the number is pathetic due to ignorance and religious misconceptions. He gave example of Tamil Nadu which has made tremendous progress in the topic and has set an example for other States to emulate. Earlier he informed the audience about MOHAN Foundation and its activities. He said anyone desirous to know more about its activities can visit the website of the Foundation. He said young citizen need to pledge organ donation, especially after death and brain death. He also asked them to carry forward the message to their States, as many States are still ignorant about the development in the field.

     

    He also asked students to wear helmets while driving a two wheeler, which would help in serious head injuries to the head if they ever met an accident.

     

    Question asked by participants.

    1) Why other states are not as good as Tamil Nadu in awareness of the subject?

    2) How can we motivate people for organ donation?

    3) If my donor card  is misplaced then how my Organs would be donated?

    4) After organ donation who gets the organs?

    5) Who will bear the cost of the donation?

     

    After the session was over Prof. Dr. Keshav Walke gave vote of thanks to Dr. Ravi Wankhede. About 200 National Service Scheme (NSS) Volunteers and Program officers were present on the occasion. Transplant Coordinators Ms. Kanchan Shewade and Mr. Bulu Behera were present during the talk, who interacted with participants and helped them to sign the pledge forms.
