Organ Donation awareness talk at a Rotary Club function

  • As part of the end of term celebrations, Rtn. Babu Hariramulu, President, Rotary Club of Chennai Chola invited MOHAN Foundation for an awareness program on Organ Donation. He invited members and presidents of other Rotary Clubs in Chennai. The session was held at Andhra Club, T Nagar Chennai on 25th June 2018 from 4 PM to 6 PM. Mr. T. S. Siva Shankar, Helpline Executive, Mr. Diego Vallejo Riofrio and Ms. Sharmila Palin interns at MOHAN Foundation were deputed for the session.

    The session started by issuing green ribbons to all the participants. The chief guest was Rtn. Muthu Palaniappan Shunmugam, Club Trainer, Rotary Club of Central Aadithya. He welcomes the members and introduced organ donation and its need in our country. He promised that he and his members from other Rotary Clubs would take up this social cause. Rtn. Babu Hariramulu, President, Rotary Club of Chennai Chola introduced the staff of MOHAN Foundation to the participants.

    Mr. Siva Shankar took over the session by introducing the activities of MOHAN Foundation followed by the Concepts of Organ Donation. He spoke on why, how and when and which organs that can be donated. He used a short film to explain Brain Death and the option of helping patients with end stage organ failure in the event of brain death. He explained the process of organ allocation and status of organ transplantation in India.

    There was lively discussions after the talk. Many doubts and misconceptions were cleared. Some questions asked by the participants were:

    1. If organ donation is happening in a hospital, then what is the need of registration in MOHAN Foundation?
    2. Will the recipient know who the donor is?
    3. If the donor family accepts for organ donation do we need to call MOHAN Foundation and confirm about donation?

    Around 25 members attended the session and 13 picked up a donor card.
