  • On August 8, 2016 MOHAN Foundation was invited to the North Zone office of Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd. to conduct an awareness session as a part of their CSR month.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is an Indian state-owned oil and natural gas company with its headquarters at Mumbai, Maharashtra. The North zone office has around 200 employees. The initiative was taken by Ms Garima Chhabra, Senior Officer- Human Resources. She had already helped organize two such sessions in the past, one at their Jaipur office with MFJCF and another in Ahmedabad.

Before the session, group employees presented a 6 minutes short skit on organ donation. It reflected the idea that a person can still live on after his/ her death by donating their organs to someone in need. It was a commendable effort, sending out the message with sensitivity and emotion.

After the skit, Ms Pallavi started by asking the audience the need for discussing organ donation. One of the persons in the audience correctly answered by saying that there was a  huge demand and supply gap of organs in our country. In fact he even quoted the figures from a latest Times of India article which highlighted the current need for organs and the number of transplants done each year. Next Ms Pallavi informed who all can be organ donors and what all organs can be donated, followed by difference between natural death and brain death. For a clear understanding for everyone present, a  5 minutes video on brain death was played which cleared the remaining doubts of the audience.

Ms Pallavi then carried on by explaining the THO act, the causes of brain death, contraindications to organ donation etc. She asked the audience if someone in their family had a transplant or waiting for one. Two of the people raised their hands. One of them told that his elder brother gave one kidney to his younger brother. He told everyone that his brother lived healthy with the donated kidney for 12 years and he urged everyone to support organ donation.  The other person shared that his mother had donated her kidney to him.

Another employee narrated her personal experience of donating her mother's corneas.  Poonam Rani told everyone that her mother was always keen on donating things to people in need, throughout her life. After her death, Poonam decided to donate her mother's eyes, but faced many hurdles when she tried seeking cooperation from other family members. Then, she and her sister, decided to not let her mother's death go waste and made the corneal donation happen at the cremation ground. She told everyone, that she and her sister had to bear a lot for their decision initially, but later when the family members got to know how someone is able to see because of their mother's donation, everyone appreciated them. Many people in the audience had tears in their eyes after listening to Ms Poonam.

In the end, Ms Pallavi discussed the myths related to organ donation. Post this, there were many queries that came up which were handled by Ms Pallavi Kumar and Ms Chaitanya Jonker.

There were around 60 people present and 25 donor cards were picked.
