Updated on Wednesday, January 12, 2011

  • The social work students from Stella Maris College, Chennai organized an awareness programme on organ donation as part of their field work curriculum.  MOHAN Foundation was invited on 11.02.2011 to give a presentation on organ donation. The local people from Kasimedu area and the members of few self help groups participated in the programme. The presentation was done by Mrs. Sujatha, MOHAN Foundation. The participants were taken through the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation. Eye donation and multi-organ donation-the need, importance, procedures, initiatives of an individual in promoting the concept, role of family in organ donation were elucidated to the participants. The story of a young organ donor (Jothirmayi, 2 years) was shared with the audience. A short film on organ donation was also shown to them at the end of the session.

The participants put across their feedback saying, "If a two year old baby can give life to so many, why can’t we? Also it is the responsibility of every individual to spread this message". Another young lady told us that she was very surprised to know that even tissues like the skin and bone can be donated and transplanted to the needy. About 40 members took part in the programme and 38 members pledged their organs by filling the donor card. The efforts of the students of Stella Maris College in taking this initiative was laudable. They promised to keep the momentum going and support MOHAN Foundation in this noble mission of spreading the message of organ donation.
