Dr. Ravi Wankhede gave a Presentation on Organ donation and Transplantation and explained the need and importance of the awareness to donate organs and tissues after death. He explained in details ‘brain death’ as a permanent and irreversible condition and hence such cases are a source of several life saving organs, such as two kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, etc besides the tissues like a pair of eyes. He emphasized on the recent starting of Skin Bank in the city. He said, instead of burning or burying functional organs, these could be donated to save life of several patients who live a miserable life for want of these organs.

Dr. Wankhede explained the huge need of kidneys particularly in India. He told that living organs donors are very little and one must think of donation of organs from persons who are declared brain dead. He said over 90% of organs are obtained from brain dead people in the developed countries. Due mainly to unawareness and irrational thinking and beliefs the number is dismal in India. He gave example of Tamil Nadu, which has shown tremendous results due to efforts of NGO like MOHAN Foundation and also a pro-active Government in the State. Because of the efforts, six out of ten people agree readily for organ donation in Tamil Nadu. He said Maharashtra has just to follow what Tamil Nadu does.

In the end Dr. Ravi Wankhede made the audience of about 200 staff and students to sing kisiki muskurhaton se ho nisaar a song from the film Anari.
