New year begins with a talk of organ donation organised by IESM and Kalamanch

  • Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement (IESM), Major Hemant Sulabha Jakate Trust and Kalamanch organized Organ Donation Awareness presentation by Sqn Ldr (Retd) Dr. Ravi Wankhede on 1st January 2017 at Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Hall, Nagpur. Major Hemant Jakate and his wife Mrs. Sulabha are well known extremely down to earth philanthropic couple, who stay in an old age home (Vruddhashram) and contribute their savings for helping several social causes. The couple was moved by the work being done by Dr. Ravi Wankhede through the MOHAN Foundation at Nagpur. Earlier he donated Rs.21,000/- to the Foundation and became a  Life & Advocacy member of MOHAN Foundation. The couple has pledged to donate organs as well as their bodies for medical studies after their death.

    Dr. Ravi Wankhede made a PPP wherein he spoke about the social, medical, legal and religious aspect of organ donation. He said, organs could be donated while living and after death. He said medical advances have now made it possible to donated several life savings organs from people who are admitted in ICU of Hospitals and are on Ventilator support. If such people are diagnosed brain dead, the ventilator helps in keeping the organs such as kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, etc to be functional as these organs from a few hours to a couple of days. Such patients could donate organs as well as eyes, skin, etc if the relatives consent to do so. Dr. Wankhede told that such practice is a routine affair in the developed world but unfortunately it is not so in India. 

    He said however Tamil Nadu has successfully carved a name for itself because the hard and dedicated work by MOHAN Foundation and good cooperation by the State Government. He said such example should be replicated by Maharashtra and other states in the country. The reason is lack of awareness, religious misunderstanding, superstitions’, etc. Dr. Wankhede said donating organs is the best service to mankind, more so because they are no more required by the dead person. There is also no reason why such organs should be burnt or buried. 

    As most of the audience comprised of ex-servicemen and their families, Dr. Wankhede said the disciplined people are known to sacrifice their lives for the country and the act of donating organs and tissues is yet another great sacrifice.

    After the talk, there was a question answer session which was answered by Dr. Ravi Wankhede. 65 people signed the consent form, who would be given the organ donor cards. Major Jakate spoke and exhorted the audience to sign the pledge forms. Shri.  Vilas Dawane from IESM and Shri. Narendra Satija of Kalamanch in their thanks giving speeches assured Dr. Ravi Wankhede to carry forward his mission. The program ended with singing of National Anthem.
