Microbiology students of Coimbatore learn about organ donation

  • On 23 July, 2014 an awareness session on organ donation and transplantation was organized at Nehru Arts and Science College in Coimbatore. Dr. Anirudhan, Principal gave an inaugural address. Felicitation speech was given by Dr. Balasubramaniyan. The session on Organ Donation and Transplantation was conducted by Mr. Ananth. R, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation from Chennai. Mrs. Dhanalakshmi, Asst Prof. Dept of Microbiology coordinated this awareness programme.

     

     

    In his talk Mr. Ananth covered the following topics: 

    • Types of donors & organs that can be donated
    • Brain death
    • Difference between natural death and brain death
    • Difference between brain stem death and coma
    • The number of hours the various organs can be preserved before transplantation

    and the importance of the donor card

    • Role of Staff Nurse and Transplant Coordinator
    • MOHAN Foundation Activities namely Transplant coordinators training programme and Grief Counseling Skills, Publications, Networking and Public education 
    • How to register  as a kidney failure patient, 

     

     

    A total of 104 UG and PG students of Microbiology Department participated in the session.  95 of them picked up donor cards and information brochures.

     

     

    Queries raised by the students:

    Whom to call to organise eye donation?

    Is there a local Coimbatore hospital where we can pledge for cornea donation?

     

    These queries were answered by Mr. Ananth.
