MOHAN Foundation conducts an Angels of Change training for volunteers of SRM Engineering College

  • MOHAN Foundation invited students of SRM University Engineering College, Katankulathur for an Angels of Change volunteer training program. This intensive training was conducted on 29th July 2017 from 11:00AM to 6:00PM for 14 student volunteers studying in 2nd and 3rd year engineering. The trainers were Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Mr. Ruban Victor and Mr. Siva Shankar of MOHAN Foundation, Chennai.

    The program started with issuing green ribbons to the 14 students, a self-introduction and a mind mapping exercise. Then the volunteers undertook a pre training survey. Each participant was given a resource kit to increase their understanding on Organ Donation.  Dr. Hemal Kanvinde introduced the activities of MOHAN Foundation and the Angels of Change program. She welcomed all the volunteers into the MOHAN family.

    Mr. Siva Shankar gave an overview on Organ donation and discussed the following topics with the help of a presentation.

    1. Why, What, How and When of Organ Donation
    2. The organs that can be donated
    3. Brain Death and its causes, Coma
    4. Myths about Organ Donation
    5. Value of a Donor Card, helpline number

    After the talk, the students were divided into groups and asked to design their own presentations on organ donation. They were given 30 minutes to discuss.

    Mr. Simon Raj, lecturer at MMM Institute of Health Sciences, shared his experience when his uncle was declared as brain dead at government hospital. He explained family dynamics, external factors and his interactions with the MOHAN Foundation counselors in the hospital during the traumatic time. He spoke how his experience made him undertake the transplant coordinator’s training program. It was a motivating experience for the students.

    This was followed by a talk by Mr. Ruban Victor, Transplant Coordinator, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences. He explained his role as a transplant coordinator and took the volunteers through one day at a hospital. The students enjoyed the class as he spoke in a light manner and made the atmosphere friendly. All students appreciated his work in promotion of organ donation.

    The students then gave showcased their presentations, quiz and posters that they had developed. The presentations were discussed. After this they were shown a recipient video to highlight the value of the gift.  Post this the students planned a mass program in their college on 10th August 2017 and got into the nitty gritty of what can be done. They came up with a plan for information desks at 10 popular places in their campus. They shall have information brochures and donor pledge registration counters as well as some games.  They planned to have an online campaign also.

    The program ended with a short film, student feedback and a photography session with the placards supporting Organ Donation. The students promised that they will convey this noble cause within their college campus.
