  • On 1st October, 2013 an awareness talk on organ donation and transplantation was organised at B-2 Police Station, Kalapet, Puducherry. The session was conducted by Mr. Ananth R, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation – deputed at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Puducherry.

Mr. Ananth explained to the police about: donor card; difference between brain death, cardiac death and coma; role of the police personnel for organ donation to take place in Medico-Legal Cases (MLC); organs that can be donated after brain death and after cardiac death; Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994 and Rules, 1995; Tamil Nadu Government Orders; Statistics of the number of organ donations in Tamil Nadu; role of transplant coordinators; and about the activities of MOHAN Foundation across the country to strengthen the deceased organ donation programme.

Since the police are particularly involved in MLCs, the following points were emphasised during the talk: importance of avoiding delay in retrieving and transplanting organs from a brain dead patient and about how to prepare an inquest.

Few queries were raised such as: how to register for eye donation, how to register for kidney transplantation and who should be informed for eye donation to take place in case of cardiac death.
