MOHAN Foundation at the 26th International Congress of The Transplantation Society (TTS) in Hong Kong

  • The Transplantation Society (TTS) – the leading international forum for the world-wide advancement of organ transplantation had its 26th International Congress in Hong Kong from 18th August to 23rd August 2016. Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, MOHAN Foundation and Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi, Manager - Information Systems, MOHAN Foundation attended the conference.

     

    Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram was presented the “Women in Transplantation Hero Award 2016” at the conference for her untiring efforts on the path of saving many lives. The award was shared by Dr. Elmi Muller, Head of the Transplant Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa.

     

    Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram also presented a paper on “Progress in deceased organ donor transplantation in India” in which she addressed the recent advances that have happened in the country. She illustrated the joint initiatives taken by the central/state governments, Non-Governmental Organizations like MOHAN Foundation and transplant professionals which have improved the deceased organ donation and transplant programme in the country. She also spoke on public advocacy, implementing the best practices in capacity building, initiating public-private-NGO partnership and their contribution for increased number of deceased donations in the recent years.

     

    Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi’s abstract on “Deceased organ donation in a public hospital - A model programme” was accepted for poster presentation at the conference. In her poster, she presented the deceased donation programme (DDP) of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) - the apex public sector hospital in Tamil Nadu. Only a handful of public hospitals in the country are participating in the DDP and RGGGH is one of them. In fact, it has been the leading public hospital by having the largest number of multi-organ donors in the country between 2010 and 2015. The vital role played by the transplant coordinators in augmenting the DDP in RGGGH was represented in her poster presentation.

     

    Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi also presented a paper on “Mobile apps to improve organ donation rate”. She spoke on how mobile apps with their rapid advances in the health care can be used to improve organ donation. She addressed the following three mobile apps that were developed by MOHAN Foundation - 1) Donor Optimization App (developed in association with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), UK), 2) Organ Registry/Allocation App & 3) e-donor card app. The need for these Apps, their reach, positive outcomes and challenges were also discussed in her presentation.

     

    There was lot of inspiring sessions at the conference, to name a few - Women in Transplantation, When organ donation becomes routine, can we take ethical practice for granted?, Financial Neutrality for deceased donor families.
