  • CII (Confederation of Indian Industries) in collaboration with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI organized the 12th India Health Summit - "Collaborating with the Government in Achieving India's Health Goals" at The Lalit, New Delhi on 10th December 2015. Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee MOHAN Foundation was invited as one of the speakers on the session of Organ Donation and Transplantation in India. Dr. Avnish Seth, Director - Fortis Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Program and Dr. Rajneesh Malhotra, Chief of Cardio Thoriac and Vascular Surgery were also present as speakers for the same session.

This is the very first time that organ donation and transplantation was being discussed at a CII health summit.

Dr. Shroff stressed on the demand and availability gap in organs in the country. He shared that there is a requirement of almost 2,10,000 kidneys a year and how India despite its vast population is able to meet the need by merely few percentage. India is slowly emerging as the diabetes capital of the world and lifestyle diseases are on the rise in our country. The need for organs due to organ failure is also on the rise.  At the same time India is also a country with the highest number of road accidents around the world. With 62,000 accidents every day, brain dead patients are not tapped and thus many organs get wasted. Apart from that lack of awareness among people is another reason for the low rates of organ donation in India.

Dr. Shroff also mentioned that it is not just the lack of public awareness that poses a challenge but also a lack of knowledge of the issue amongst the doctors and the paramedical staff. A large number of doctors are themselves are not completely aware of brain death and the process of Organ Donation. Dr. Shroff pointed out how MOHAN Foundation is putting its efforts to bridge this gap by creating as much as awareness possible and also by training transplant coordinators from different hospitals.
