On December 12, 2015 MOHAN Foundation was invited for the celebration of Indian Organ Donation Awareness Program organized by Safdarjung Hospital & Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, New Delhi at the Lecture theatre 1.
The Chief guest of the Program was Honorable Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister of State for Culture & Tourism (Independent Charge) & Minister of state for Civil Aviation ,Government of India. An alumni of the hospital, he shared his past experiences and memories of the time when he was pursuing his MBBS in the institution. He stressed on the importance of the role of doctors in the organ donation program. He said that in India the doctors are placed on the same pedestal as gods and have the unwavering trust of the patients and In this scenario, if the doctors took the onus of the program upon them then there would be nothing which could stop the organ donation program receiving the due success which it deserves and urged all the doctors present to own the program. He also mentioned that just celebrity endorsement alone will not suffice to provide the organ donation program the much needed thrust, but what is needed is a strong government will and partnership, which would provide the required infrastructure.
The program was attended by doctors, politicians, celebrities and other medical professionals.
Ms. Anjum Chopra (Ex. Captain of Indian women cricket team) and Mr. Bishan Singh Bedi (Ex. Captain of Indian Cricket team) added the celebrity element towards the program.
The speakers spoke on a myriad of topics ranging from the current status of organ transplant in India, status of the heart and lung transplant, how to set up a transplant program , strategies for capacity building in renal transplant, brain death certification , role of NOTTO in organ transplant program, registry and data management or organ transplant and more.
Dr. Muneet Sahi spoke on the role of a transplant coordinator in organ donation.
MOHAN Foundation was mentioned many a times during the program for the important and the defining role it has played in the promotion of organ donation within the country and training of the transplant coordinators.
