CME on Deceased Donor Multi Organ Transplantation for House Surgeons of Govt Medical College, Trivandrum

  • On 28th and 30th May 2014, KNOS, Mrithasanjeevani and MOHAN Foundation in association with Antaragni, an association initiated by the House Surgeons of class 2008 batch MBBS, Trivandrum Medical College (GMCT) organized a CME on “Deceased Donor Multi Organ Transplantation Programme” (DDMOTP) in Diamond Jubilee Auditorium and Super Speciality Block Seminar Hall. The CME was conducted exclusively for the House Surgeons of GMCT and to give them an insight on the Legal and Medical aspects pertaining to Brain Death for a deceased donation programme.  

     

    The CME started with lamp lighting ceremony and followed by a formal launch of Antaragni. The motto of the association is to provide unconditional support for KNOS and be an instrument to the deceased donation programme in nationwide.

     

    Prof. Sreekumari, HOD Forensic Medicine spoke on Legal and Ethical challenges in deceased organ donation. She imparted knowledge on all GOs regarding Medico Legal cases, brain death certification, organ retrieval process and forms involved in THO Act. She also explained how House Surgeons can play a key role in increasing the efficiency of a deceased organ donation programme. After the session Dr. Noble Gracious, Asst Professor, Nephrology, GMCT, Nodal officer DDMOTP explained about the progress and future of Kerala Network for Organ Sharing. He also gave them an insight on organ allocation process using KNOS website.

     

    A short movie on Brain Stem Death by MOHAN Foundation and footage covered by Mathrubhumi News during a cadaver donation by the donor named “Sherly” from SUT Hospital, Trivandrum was shown to the audience. After this Dr. Anil Sathyadas, Associate Professor, Anaesthesiology explained about the Maintenance of Brain Death donor of the multi organ donor and how it can result in optimize yield of satisfactory organs and will eventually minimize the possibility of wasting transplantable organs.  

     

    Dr. Rohit Krishna, Secretary of the class of 2008 batches and Antaragni delivered the vote of thanks and also assured their active participation in the Deceased Donor Multi Transplant Programme. Overall 173 House Surgeons had participated in the CME.
