  • On October 13, 2018, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at Red Roses Public School, Saket, New Delhi. The session was organized for the parents of the students from classes Nursery to Class 12th as part of Parent-Teacher Meet (PTM). Ms Dharitri Jena (Teacher, Red Roses Public School) took the initiative to organize the session. Ms. Pallavi Sood was the resource person for the session and Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi (Programme Manager MOHAN Foundation-NCR) accompanied her.

Ms Pallavi Sood started the session by asking a few introductory questions on organ donation and organ donor card to understand the participants knowledge about the cause. Out of all the participants only 1 or 2 people had heard about organ donation. One of the participants shared her experience as she knew someone who had donated one of the kidneys.

Ms. Sood then introduced MOHAN Foundation and its role in the past years. She spoke about the current statistics of organ donation in comparison to other countries. She touched upon the need for organ donation in our country as many people are suffering with end stage organ disease where the only treatment is transplantation. She also explained the reasons as to why other European countries have much higher ODR (Organ Donation Rate) as compared to India. Difference between circulatory death and brain death was explained. Clarification about different organs and the time span of their removal from the deceased body was also explained. She also made sure that the participants were well acquainted to the different types of hospitals and services offered by them as not all hospitals are registered to do organ transplantation. The condition of brain stem death was explained with the help of a video and common causes of brain death enumerated. The difference between coma and brain-death was elaborated with the help of examples. Myths were discussed and the participants were invited to ask questions and clarify their doubts if any.

    The participants had few queries

    1)   How to get an organ donor card and what is the process involved?

    2)   How can liver be donated while the person is still alive?

All their queries were addressed in a professional manner. Post the session, MF representatives met the principal who was keen to organise sessions for the teachers and students. MF counsellors told the principal that they would be happy to conduct the sessions. In the end Ms Jena said that she would write to MF whenever they have a date available in the near future.

Close to 42 participants attended the session and 6 forms (Form 7) were picked up.
