Ms. Pallavi Kumar was the resource person for the session. Ms. Pallavi Sood (Transplant Coordianator, MOHAN Foundation-NCR) also accompanied her for the session.

Earlier in the month of June, a session had been conducted for the students of PHFI, this was the second session that was conducted for the fresh batch pursuing Diploma and Masters in Public Health.

Ms Pallavi Kumar started the session by asking a few introductory questions on organ donation and organ donor card to understand their knowledge about the cause.

One of the participants shared experience of her friend who had kidney failure and her mother donated one of her kidneys. She spoke about donation & transplantation.

Ms. Kumar then explained the reasons as to why other European countries have much higher ODR (Organ Donation Rate) as compared to India. Opt In and opt out systems were explained with respect to consent system followed in the world. The condition of brain stem death was explained with the help of a video and common causes of brain death were also enumerated. The difference between coma and brain-death was elaborated with the help of examples. Myths were discussed with the participants and the floor was then opened for questions.

The participants had few queries, namely:

    • Why the rate of eye donation is still less in spite of awareness campaigns.
    • Are all the organs used when harvested from a body?
    • What is to be done when the family is willing to donate but the organs are not fit?

All the queries were addressed in a professional manner.

The session ended with a motivational video on organ donation. Close to 42 participants attended the session and 23 forms (Form 7) were picked up.
