  • On March 15, 2018, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation for doctors and nurses of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. Ms Jyoti Sharma, ex MOHAN Foundation employee and now Transplant Coordinator, Apollo hospital took the initiative to organise the session.

Dr Vikas Kumar Sangwan, Deputy Manager, Medical Services welcomed Dr Muneet and introduced her to the group. Following which he invited her to begin the session.

Dr Muneet began by introducing the Foundation and its activities. She did not have to give any in-depth information on organ donation as the participants were well informed. There were nurses from intensive care unit, transplant surgeons (liver & kidney), emergency specialists and doctors from admin medical services. It was an interactive session with back-and-forth dialog between MF counsellor and the participants.

Major General (Dr) LR Sharma, Director Medical Services in his address spoke about the hospitals deceased & living donation programme as being in place though not robust as the conversion rate was not high as far as deceased donations was concerned. He also said that the hospital routinely conducts trainings and workshops for their staff and doctors from National and International faculty on donor identification & maintenance and counselling on how to approach a family for organ donation. He further added that lacunae in the Transplant law regarding taking off the patient from the ventilator in situations where families refuse for organ donation and lack of in-house team work and coordination were some of the grey areas that needed to be worked on.

At the end, Dr Sharma felicitated MF representatives by giving them mementos.

Close to 35 participants attended the session.
