  • MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation at Kamrah Institute of Innovative Teaching {KIIT} Global School, Pitampura on August 4, 2016.

TOI had organized various sessions on organ donation in different schools across Delhi-NCR in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation as part of organ donation drive that began in February 2016 culminating in a 13-day campaign starting Aug 1-13 2016. Today's session at KIIT school was part of this campaign.

KIIT World School, formerly known as New State Academy was established in 1984 founded by the parent society, Vidyapati Sansthan (Regd.). The focus of school has always been to provide education for life and empower students to lead a life that is demonstrative of school ethos. It promotes environment that helps an individual grow up to be as socially responsible, spiritually inclined, intellectually elevated and extremely empathetic towards peoples' concerns. Since the inception, the school has actively participated and partnered in various community projects. The sensitivity towards environment is reflected through cleanliness drives, zero litter movement, tree plantations, ECO club activities.

Mr. Shardool from Times of India had organised the program in coordination with Ms. Priyanka Sikri (School Coordinator, KIIT Global School). Ms. Mareena Thomas (Programme Officer-Delhi NCR) took the session at KIIT Global School for the second time.

One section each from 10th-12th attended the session. Majority of them had already heard about organ donation while few had also registered to be an organ donor. The students were surprised to know that only in the case of brain death can one donate organs. It was also emphasized that the health of the organs were taken into consideration for donation, so one should feel privileged to be an organ donor. Mareena also shared her experience with families who have donated the organs of their loved ones. The families had shared that they felt their loved one was still alive somewhere in someone through donating their organs. They felt privileged and thankful for having been given such an opportunity.

She also clarified that the families can carry out the process of organ, tissue or even whole body donation. According to the law at the time of our death it the family who needs to carry out all the procedures no matter where all we sign up to donate our organ, tissue or whole body. Thus it is very important to share your wish with your family so they can take required steps whenever necessary.

She requested all the students to talk to their parents about organ donation, as that would be the best they could do at their level. By the end of the session many students wished to sign up the donor card. Few also wanted to take home some donor cards to talk to their parents and make them an organ donor too. Few donor cards were also given to Ms. Priyanka for those students who may want to pledge their organs after getting the consent from their parents.
