Updated on Monday, September 20, 2010
  • Mrs. Indhra, a 28-years-old lady was declared brain dead by a team of physicians on 17th September 2010. Ms. Indhra got married to Mr. Narayanan 5 years back. After marriage, with her husband’s support she continued her studies and was doing a Teacher’s Training Course. This lovable couple was blessed with a son Sanjay (one and a half years old) and she was expecting her second baby in a few days. Unfortunately on 13th September 2010, she met with a road traffic accident and was admitted in Government General Hospital, Chennai. The doctors at G.G.H put in their wholehearted effort to save the mother and the baby.  But all the efforts ended in vain. After 3 days, the dead foetus was expelled and on the fourth day morning, Mrs. Indhra was declared brain dead.

The whole family was in terrible grief. The desolate husband who lost his wife was in extreme pain and seemed  blank, and unable to realize what to do next. The transplant coordinator from MOHAN Foundation counseled the family and requested them to consider the option of Organ Donation. Despite the unending grief the family understood the concept of organ donation and decided to pass on their loved one’s life even after death. The whole family consented for organ donation. Mrs. Indhra’s Heart valves, Liver, Kidneys and Eyes were donated on 18.09.2010. By taking a remarkable decision even at a time of grief, the family has given life to many who were on their deathbeds.
